Ebook About The Diary of a Yorkshire VetBy Julian NortonTaken from his popular column in The Yorkshire Post, Julian Norton’s The Diary of a Yorkshire Vet features anecdotes from his veterinary work in North Yorkshire. From hairy pigs near Helmsley to a bullock with an enormous eye at Old Byland, these true stories bring to life the drama and humour in the daily routine of a rural vet. Along the way, Julian deals with llamas near Brimham Rocks, greedy sheep in Cold Kirby, eagles, seals, alpacas and Geoffrey Boycott.About the AuthorJulian has been working in mixed practice in rural North Yorkshire for the majority of his twenty-one years as a vet, much of this in the market town of Thirsk, made famous by James Herriot and his books. During this time, he has seen many varied cases, unusual animals great and small and has met and become friends with a huge mixture of fascinating farmers and pet owners. In 2015, Julian became involved with the hit TV series The Yorkshire Vet, which continues to be a popular Channel 5 programme. He contributes a weekly column to The Country Week section of The Yorkshire Post, documenting his weekly veterinary anecdotes. Julian currently works in the market town of Boroughbridge, continuing his passion for independent mixed practice, where he works with his wife, Anne who is also a vet.Book The Diary of a Yorkshire Vet Review :
I hate it when I can't give, in good conscience, a five star review. Unfortunately, it appears this author is attempting to write in the style of James Herriot. The author worked in the same practice as Mr. Herriot had worked and made famous in his many books. However, that is where the similarities end. While it may well be that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," I would add the word, "Good," or, perhaps, "Accurate," to the phrase. In this case, the " imitation" falls flat. I did not read the entire book, as I never, really, felt the connection, the interest, the enjoyment, for which I was looking. It is a rather boring and stilted version of the prose of which Mr Herriot was so adept. I shall continue my search for authors of the caliber of Mr. Herriot. Don't misunderstand, I am not looking for an author who writes just as Mr. Herriot did. I am looking for one who's writing interests me in the subject matter at hand. Also, do I really need a colour photograph of a cow with her uterus hanging out? Mr. Herriot described this situation and did it well. This author felt the need, for whatever reason, to display a colour photograph for our edification. If one's writing is such that one feels the need for such extraneous literary assistance, threat is a sign that, perhaps, one needs to rethink his style and ability. It reminds me, in a way, of authors who place sex scenes throughout a book that do not need to be there, but may be the sign of a writer who is unsure of his own ability. I enjoyed reading Julian's daily accounts of his calls. However, what I didn't like is he doesn't tell you the follow-up of what happened to these animals he treated. You are just left hanging. Also, I have been watching the TV program, The Yorkshire Vet, and it seems as though he has written the book from the TV show's episodes. Even the dialog is exactly the same.
